The new chip is a key part of Evonetix’s desktop DNA platform which will enable the growing field of synthetic biology.
The new technology uses the MEMs IC that controls the synthesis of DNA at many thousands of independently controlled reaction sites or ‘pixels’ on the chip surface in a highly parallel fashion. After synthesis, these strands are built on-chip into double-stranded DNA with a process that identifies and removes errors, enabling accuracy, scale and speed that is better than normal approaches. imec and Evonetix will work together to increase manufacturing of the MEMS technology on 8-inch silicon wafers to commercial quantities. Imec will use its extensive experience in silicon manufacture for life sciences to transfer the Evonetix process to their foundries and to manage further expansion in volume.
