With its open source approach, Apollo is considered the leading technology platform for autonomous driving in China. The consortium already cooperates with more than 130 partners from industry and science. This enables it to cover all relevant aspects of this technology, from hardware-based sensor technology to the development of algorithms for controlling autonomous vehicles.

Sven Patuschka, Board Member for Technical Development at Volkswagen (China) Investment Co., explained that Apollo’s open source approach is extremely promising in addressing the numerous technological, regulatory and ethical aspects of autonomous driving. Volkswagen intends to bring the expertise of a cross-brand development team from Volkswagen and Audi into the cooperation with Apollo. A first joint project is already about to start, said the VW top manager.

In Xiongan, south of Beijing, there is a newly created test site especially for autonomous driving, on which Volkswagen and Apollo also want to test their first joint projects in the future. Among other things, a Volkswagen test vehicle with Apollo software is to be set up.
