PLC modem streamlines installation of smart energy equipment
Microchip has launched a Power Line Communication (PLC) modem that supports multiple standard and proprietary protocols used worldwide in smart grids.

The PL360B only needs a simple firmware change to change between protocols. It supports ITU G.9903 (G3-PLC) and ITU G.9904 (PRIME), as well as CENELEC, FCC and ARIB compliant applications in the frequency band up to 500 kHz. Reference designs for adding a PLC interface to applications are provided with the modem.

The PL360B is supported by the ATPL360 evaluation kit, which has two evaluation boards for point-to-point communication. The kit includes PC tools for evaluating the PL360B’s performance, including a PHY tester, PLC “sniffer” and a PLC manager. G3-PLC and PRIME-PLC communications firmware are provided free of charge. Reference designs include a complete electricity meter with PLC, a single PLC modem and a master PLC device. The reference designs come with design files, bill of materials and schematics.
