The modules offer a wide range of configurable interfaces and can operate in the extended industrial temperature range. BL653 has been designed to offer reliable Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity while supporting NFC and 802.15.4 communication (Thread and Zigbee) for IioT applications.

BL653 Series modules come in a small form factor (15 mm × 10 mm × 2.2 mm ) and offer longer range, multi-wireless capabilities and an extended temperature range up to 105 oC. The devices are based around the Nordic nRF52833 SoC. The BL653 modules take full advantage of the SoC’s 64 MHz Arm Cortex-M4 with FPU, high output power of up to +8 dBm, and sensitivity of -95 dBm sensitivity in 1 Mbps.

The modules provide Bluetooth 5.1 features, including direction finding with angle of arrival (AoA) and angle of departure (AoD), and long-range (Coded PHY) and 2M PHY support for data rates of 2 Mbits per second (Mbps), 1 Mbps, and 125 Kbps. The modules allow a choice between Laird Connectivity’s smartBASIC, simple AT command set, Nordic SDK, or Zephyr RTOS for greater design flexibility. The family has options for integrated PCB trace antenna options or Trace Pad variants for the connection of pre-certified internal and external antennas.

The BL653 has modular FCC, IC, CE, RCM, MIC, and Bluetooth SIG approvals,. These approvals extend to final design, negating the need for additional testing. To support development, a fully featured BL653 development kit is also available. The dev kit has either an internal antenna or a range of pre-certified external FlexPIFA antenna.
