High-performance inertial measurement unit for VR and AR applications

By eeNews Europe

The unit combines a low-drift, 3-axis, 16-bit MEMS acceleration sensor and a low-noise, 3-axis, 16-bit MEMS gyroscope in a single, 3.0 x 4.5 x 0.95 mm package. The BMI085 is intended for use in both virtual reality and augmented reality applications, and can also be used in other applications such as navigation and motion tracking.

The combination of the two sensors can significantly reduce the motion sickness effects associated with VR and AR applications by providing precise measurements almost instantly. With a low-temperature coefficient offset (TCO) of typically less than 0.2 mg/K and temperature coefficient sensitivity (TCS) of only 0.002 %/K, the IMU has a motion-to-photon latency that is under 3 ms and remains stable with high-temperature fluctuations, further improving accuracy. The gyroscope has a bias instability under 2°/h.
