FWDNXT was founded in 2016 and had introduced its hardware IP and software “inference engine” on cards based on Xilinx FPGAs. Micron provides high bandwidth memory to accompany this combination.

The acquisition allows Micron to explore machine learning for data analytics, particularly in IoT and edge computing, the company said. Micron now offers a deep learning accelerator (DLA) card that includes the FWDNXT inference engine.

“FWDNXT is an architecture designed to create fast-time-to-market edge AI solutions through an extremely easy to use software framework with broad modeling support and flexibility,” said Sumit Sadana, chief business officer at Micron, in a statement. “FWDNXT’s five generations of machine learning inference engine development and neural network algorithms, combined with Micron’s deep memory expertise, unlocks new power and performance capabilities to enable innovation for the most complex and demanding edge applications.”

Micron’s DLA technology provides a software programmable platform that supports a range of machine learning frameworks and neural networks.
