Infineon Technologies has announced commercial availability of the industry’s highest density serial ferroelectric non-volatile memories.

The 8- and 16Mbit Excelon FRAM devices are aimed at data-logging in automotive and industrial systems to help prevent data loss in harsh operating environments. The memory devices have a wide voltage operation from 1.71 V to 3.6 V with support for SPI and quad SPI (QSPI) low-pin count interface in a 24-ball FBGA package.

“With the increase of automation and the rapid growth of connected sensors, datalogging requirements are driving the need for higher density memories that capture data reliably and instantly in the event of a power loss,” said Ramesh Chettuvetty, who heads the RAM product line at Infineon’s Automotive Division.

“Our new Excelon FRAM products offer superior performance and reliability for mission-critical data capture, without sacrificing ultra-low power operation, making them ideal for factory automation solutions and automotive event data recorders.”

The read and write performance of these serial memories are equivalent to parallel-interface, battery-backed Static RAMs with 35ns access time but with power consumption as much as 70x lower.

Infineon offers a broad portfolio of serial and parallel FRAM products with densities ranging from 4Kbit to 16Mbit, that support a 1.8V to 5.5V operating voltage range. They have an endurance of one hundred trillion read and write cycles, making them suitable for write-intensive applications.

The industrial-grade 8- and 16Mbit FRAM devices can be ordered now in a 24-ball FBGA package and are capable of supporting operating temperatures up to 105°C. The AEC-Q100 qualified, automotive-grade 3 16-Mbit devices can also be ordered now and are available in the same 24-ball FBGA package.
