HERE reports strong uptake for Intelligent Speed Assistance
Since July 2022, it has been mandatory for all new car, van, truck and bus models in Europe to have an Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) system installed. From July 2024, manufacturers must equip every new vehicle sold in the EU with an ISA system. ISA is an in-vehicle safety system that tells drivers the maximum speed allowed on any road in the EU. To date, over 30 brands from 15 car manufacturers worldwide have chosen the HERE ISA Map, the company claims. By 2024, an estimated 50 million vehicles in the EU could be equipped with speed limit data from HERE.
To meet the requirements of the regulation, numerous car manufacturers have opted for HERE Technologies’ ISA Map since it came into force. According to the company, 30 brands from 15 OEMs plan to use HERE’s implementation of ISA. In addition to HERE’s shareholders – Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Mitsubishi – these include OEMs Jaguar Land Rover, Scania and VinFast, according to HERE. Shareholders also include a number of tier as well as tier two suppliers, such as Bosch, Continental and Intel.
“The European ISA Directive will usher in a new era of mobility services with location-based data in the automotive industry. Simply put, in order to operate as an automaker in the European market, automakers from all regions will need a location-based data platform and technology that can provide accurate and up-to-date information on local speed limits,” said James Hodgson, Principal Analyst at ABI Research. “Future applications for autonomous and electric vehicles will use a broader range of comprehensive and dynamic attributions. Therefore, manufacturers should look for a platform that can meet the requirements for an ISA release in the short term and is scalable in terms of long-term requirements.”
HERE location-based data and software services are used in 170 million vehicles worldwide. Currently, HERE’s platform processes live sensor data from an estimated 34 million linked vehicles to enrich services for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and connected and automated driving. The information from this large fleet of vehicles helps HERE to continuously update speed limits on the map.
